Harry Carey, Jr. was born Henry George Carey in Saugus, Santa Clarita, California, the son of actor Henry DeWitt Carey II (known as: Harry Carey, Sr., 1878–1947) and actress Olive Carey (1896–1988). His maternal grandfather was vaudeville entertainer George Fuller Golden. As a boy, he was nicknamed "Dobe"; his father gave him the nickname shortly after his birth because the baby's red hair reminded him of the adobe soil at the ranch. Dobe went to school in the Newhall Public Schools, and then went to the Black Foxe Military Institute in Hollywood.
During World War II, Carey enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and he served in the Pacific Theater first as a Navy medical corpsman. However, he was transferred back to the United States (against his wishes) to serve in the "Field Photographic Reserve" under his father's good friend, the director John Ford, (at that time a naval officer, he retired as Rear Admiral) in making movies for the Navy, training films, and at the O.S.S. (Office of Strategic Services, the predecessor of the CIA) making propaganda films in Washington DC.
For his contribution to the television industry, Harry Carey, Jr., was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6363 Vine Street. In 2003, he was inducted into the Western Performers Hall of Fame at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
